Mother/Daughter was made from cotton, silk, polyester organza, machine embroidered poly organza, cotton trim. Techniques: Original digital photograph printed on cotton. Heat fusion and raw edge appliqué of silk and organza. Machine stitched to create texture in tree and background. There is no paint. This piece is faced and backed; includes 4 inch hanging sleeve. Unframed.

In the series “Portraits of Women as Trees,” this is the first to include more than one tree. The leader/follower, parent/child relationship struck me but the disproportionate amount of white space between the trees was troubling. I left this uncomfortable gap because it mirrors the relationship between my mother and myself. The clothing emphasizes some of our differences: a slip my mother would wear when dancing in the living room and the Easter dress I wore when I was four. But, like these trees, we have underlying similarities and despite the notable separation between us, we are intertwined.

I set the mood of Mother/Daughter with transparent clothing to reveal my models' underlying character that otherwise might be obscured by clothing and action. Layering and narrative to create a visual invitation for self-reflection and discussion.

This was the first photograph in the series "Portraits of Women as Trees" to include more than one tree. The parent/child relationship was instantly recognizable. The large amount of white space and the clothing I added (machine embroidered poly organza and silk) mirrors my relationship with my own mother. The trees claim that we are nevertheless intertwined by our limbs and roots.
