Peers was made from cotton, silk and polyester organza, and imitation pearl beads. Techniques: Original digital photograph printed on cotton. Heat fusion and raw edge appliqué. Machine stitched to create texture in trees and background. There is no paint. This piece is faced and backed; includes a 4 inch hanging sleeve. Unframed.

In the sixth in the series "Portraits of Women as Trees," the nature of this grouping of trees struck me as ambiguous—although the vines of poison ivy did not. Peers is a confrontation. Or is it an invitation? Is she in, or is she out? Does she want to be included? Are differences being embraced or shunned? Who is choosing? I moved a lot while growing up and as ‘the new girl’ frequently encountered these dynamics, eventually becoming more savvy in navigating it. 

I set the mood of Peers with transparent clothing to reveal my models' underlying character that otherwise might be obscured by clothing and action. Layering and narrative to create a visual invitation for self-reflection and discussion.

The nature of this grouping of trees struck me as ambiguous-although the poison ivy did not. This 6th piece in the series "Portraits of Women as Trees appears to be a confrontation. Or is it an invitation? Is she in, or is she out? Are differences being embraced or shunned? Clothing was added using silk and poly organzas, and imitation pearl beads.  Note: Compared to the original, your print may be cropped slightly to fit the print format.
