She Dances was made from cotton, silk, polyester organza, and gold braid. Techniques: Original digital photograph printed on cotton. Heat fusion and raw edge appliqué of individually cut strips of silk and organza. Machine stitched to create texture in tree and background. There is no paint. This piece is faced and backed; includes a 4 inch hanging sleeve. Unframed.

She Dances is second in the series “Portraits of Women as Trees.” This tree stood erect and stable, perhaps rigid and stoic in character. I dressed her with repeating colors, curves, and stitching that echoes the outlines of her dress to convey rhythm and motion—to make her dance. The red circles in the dress emerge from her scarred heart to flow and expand as she dances.

I set the mood of these portraits with transparent clothing to reveal my models' underlying character that otherwise might be obscured by clothing and action. Layering and narrative to create a visual invitation for self-reflection and discussion.

This tree and I had a standoff. This was the 2nd tree I photographed in the series "Portraits of Women as Trees." She stood rigid and stoic and I wanted her to lighten up and dance! Repeating colors and shapes (poly and silk organza) and stitching that echos the outline of her dress convey rhythm and motion. Red circles amplify and a scar over her heart. And then-gold bangles!  Note: Compared to the original, your print may be cropped slightly to fit the print format.
