Third in the series, Seven Modern Sins, SHAME was a process of self-discovery. The prelim sketches began with the idea of the burden/weight of what I had done...and then progressed to an inward response to who I am. The turning inward and covering my face was my answer, which, as it turns out, is an archetypical gesture among children and adults across cultures. The figure is surrounded by square cut-outs containing pouches of tangled fabric strips (like spaghetti in tea bags). When backlit, the figure glows red and you can see the transparency of the cutouts.

Materials: Cotton, linen, velvet, silk organza, nylon organza

Techniques: Hand and machine pieced, raw edge appliqué, heat fusion, machine stitching. Cut-outs and outer edges are faced. An organza pouch (edges stitched) filled with fabric strips is tacked to the inside corners of each cut-out. Backed.
